Lancaster CA Sleep Center Detects Nighttime Breathing Problems
Has someone ever suggested that you stop breathing during your sleep? Sounds like a strange statement, but there actually could be some truth to the claim. If you suffer from a fairly common sleep disorder, called obstructive sleep apnea, you very well could stop breathing while you sleep.
You may have noticed some of the symptoms – do you sometimes wake up gasping for air? Have you been told you snore? Did you know that most people are not aware of their snoring? Do you wake up tired? Are you drowsy throughout the day? These are all signs of this sleep problem.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition where the air passage way in your throat closes or collapses during the night. This condition usually happens just briefly, followed by a brief arousal which is not noted by the patient, and the air passage way opens again.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a very serious medical condition. During the night, your body is being robbed of the oxygen it needs. Sleep apnea can lead to heart disease, strokes, and even diabetes. Fortunately, obstructive sleep apnea is also very treatable.
The first step in evaluating whether you have apnea is to meet with your physician. Your physician can help you determine whether you have the underlying symptoms of apnea. Simply by examining you and asking a series of questions, your physician may begin to suspect that you do indeed suffer from apnea.
But the final evaluation is through a sleep study. When you submit to a sleep study at our Lancaster CA sleep center, we evaluate your sleep overnight. Using a series of sensors, we monitor your sleep. We’ll check the amount of oxygen level in your blood and we’ll track your heart beat, brain wave patterns, airflow and muscle movement.
While a sleep study at the Lancaster CA sleep center may sound invasive, it’s actually a simple and non-invasive procedure. Your only real task is to come to the center and sleep – what could be easier? Our trained technicians monitor your sleep throughout the night. Upon waking, you can go home.
If you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, there will be evidence of it in the sleep study. The good news is that once you have been diagnosed your physician can begin treating this disorder and help you regain good sleep health.
There are a variety of treatments available for apnea. Your physician will discuss the best course of treatments with you, and he / she may even monitor the results of the treatment with another overnight study at our Lancaster CA sleep center after one to two years. Our goal is to make sure that we are improving your sleep, your health and your quality of life. All of this can be accomplished simply by treating sleep apnea.
