Why Can’t You Sleep?

Los Angeles Sleep Center Can Help You Find Answers

Do you suffer from sleep problems at night? Do you ever notice that you startle awake?  Has a partner suggested that you seem to stop breathing sometimes in your sleep? If this sounds like something you have experienced, you may be suffering from a common sleep problem called sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea occurs when someone stops breathing during their sleep cycle. There are two possible reasons for this condition. The first is called Central Sleep Apnea, which is fairly uncommon. The more common form of apnea is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. With Obstructive Sleep  Apnea, the muscles or soft tissue in the back of the throat prevent (or reduce) the inflow of air.

There are a number of symptoms that suggest an individual may be suffering from sleep apnea. If you snore during the night, hold your breath during sleep, wake fatigued or with a morning headache, you may need to be evaluated for sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders, can be diagnosed with a sleep study. Our Los Angeles / Century City sleep center is a convenient facility for sleep studies. Sleep studies are conducted by highly trained sleep medicine professionals and utilize the most advanced sleep testing equipments.

The Los Angeles sleep center allows you to check in for an evening to evaluate your sleep cycles. While at the center, you will be in a private, sound-proof room. The study is a non-invasive procedure. During the study, your brain waves, heart rate, breathing patterns and body movements are tracked through the use of electronic sensors. During the evening of your study, our trained sleep technologists monitor your sleep patterns. All the data is recorded and evaluated by our Board Certified and trained  sleep specialist.

The patterns of your sleep cycles can be indicative of sleep problems. At the Los Angeles sleep center, your sleep cycles are tracked, including how long it takes you to fall asleep, how you cycle through sleep, how often you are awakened, and how long you spend in spend in different stages of  sleep (REM, NREM). All of this information, and more, is very important in determining potential sleep problems.

If your referring  doctor suspects that you may suffer from sleep apnea, the results of the sleep study  will be very important. There are a number of treatments that can be very effective for sleep apnea. These treatments include weight loss, the use of a CPAP machine to keep the airway open, a dental device, or possible surgery. The decision as to which treatment option is best suited for your condition will be made by your physician in consultation with you.

You’ll be amazed at the improvement a restful night of sleep can make in your life and in your health.
