What is Home Sleep Testing (HST)?

You’re probably familiar with the idea of a sleep study. You’re likely picturing a bed in a sleep center, a night away from your home and your family, a tangle of wires and sensors, and a somewhat restless night of sleep.

But what if I told you that there was a sleep study option that let you test for sleep disorders from the comfort of your home, with a minimum of equipment, at a lower price than an in-center test?

That’s where Home Sleep Testing comes in.

What is Home Sleep Testing?

It’s just what it sounds like: it lets you test for sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, from the comfort of your own home and bed. No sleep centers, no technicians, and no overnight stays.

What is an HST like?

A home sleep test (HST) is a lot less complicated than a traditional in-center study. There are only three sensors involved: a nasal sensor, a chest band, and a finger clip. Also, there is no need for an overnight technician to monitor you while you are sleeping.

The patient will receive the testing monitor for one night with instructions on how to use it. (Don’t worry if you forget anthing; there’s a video tutorial as well!). All you have to do to initiate the study is put on the sensors and turn on the device. After wearing the machine for the night, you return it to your clinician for a complete analysis and recommendations.

Plus, home testing is affordable. Because of its simplicity, it typically costs less than half of a traditional sleep studywhich makes it a good option for people paying out-of-pocket and insurance holders alike.

Why should you have a Home Sleep Test?

Over 40 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea and less than 15 percent are actually being treated. Home sleep testing takes the hassle out of the testing and allows you to get a safe, accurate picture of your snoozing hours.

If you think you might have a sleep disorder or have been putting off having a study, this is your opportunity to take the first step towards improving your health.
